GEORGE TRAGEDY: HERE IS THE LATEST UPDATE FROM THE SCENE

Rescue operations at the building collapse site in George continue, and rescuers have found more workers.

RESCUE OPERATION HAS NOW BEEN GOING MORE THAN 48 HOURS

The incident took place on Monday just after 14:00.

As of 09:00 on Wednesday, 8 May, rescuers have retrieved thirty-six people from the collapsed building, according to the latest update from the George Municipality.

“Among the 36 people retrieved, seven are deceased, 16 are critically injured, six have sustained life-threatening injuries, and six have sustained minor injuries.”

A total of 39 workers remain unaccounted for

Meanwhile, a total of 39 of the initial 75 workers on site remain unaccounted for at present.

“Rescue operations continue at the building collapse site on Victoria Street today. With a multi-disciplinary rescue team of more than 200 emergency services available.” 

According to the George Herald, emergency workers across South Africa have flown in to assist with the rescue mission. 

THE COMMUNITY HAS COME TOGETHER TO ASSIST

“The rescue operation is now approaching  43 hours as of 09:00 this morning, 8 May.” 

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa asserts that authorities must be allowed space to investigate the cause of the collapse.

Authorities will conduct investigations to establish the cause of the collapse 

Liatel Developments, the contractors of the Neo Victoria multi-storey apartment block that collapsed in George, affirm their commitment to cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the tragedy, as reported by the George Herald.

Theuns Kruger, the director of Liatel Developments, says the company’s priority is to assist with ongoing rescue efforts in any way possible.

“We are co-ordinating closely with emergency responders and authorities to provide support and resources for the rescue operations. We fully commit to cooperating with the authorities to determine the cause of this incident.

Kruger said they will ensure to conduct a thorough investigation to understand what led to the collapse.

THE COMPANY SAYS IT IS EXTREMELY GRATEFUL FOR THE PROMPT RESPONSE FROM EMS SERVICES 

He furthermore told the publication that the company is ‘extremely grateful’ for emergency services’ prompt response and the ‘bravery of those involved in the rescue efforts’.

“We will continue to offer our assistance and support to the community in this difficult time.

“We at Liatel are deeply saddened by the events that have unfolded in George. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this tragedy, and we extend our sincerest sympathy to the victims and their families.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic event,” 

says Kruger.
