ELON MUSK CANCELS TESLA SUMMER INTERNSHIPS FOR STUDENTS

  • Elon Musk's Tesla has rescinded summer internship offers through a phone call
  • Many of the laid off interns had signed house leases and were to start by May 20
  • The layoffs come as a result of Tesla's mass layoff announcement last month

Elon Musk's Tesla has reportedly rescinded its summer internship offers from university students - amid mass layoffs and budget cuts.

Multiple students across the U.S. took to LinkedIn to share their situation and how they were coping the situation, especially since most were due start their new job in merely three weeks.

Joshua Schreiber, a Miami University student, told his connections that in the span of three hours, he went from checking a Tesla email for his flight information to being told that his offer was gone.

But the hopeful college finalist added that he will 'remain optimistic' and look for other opportunities - despite spending 'thousands on housing.'

'At 8:46am, I opened a Tesla email for flight info. By 11:25am, my internship offer was gone. Experiencing #masslayoffs as a student is rarely talked about on LinkedIn, yet this conversation is important to have.

'Yes, it sucks my start date was just 3 weeks away. Yes, it sucks I spent thousands on housing. Yes, it sucks to experience this in college.

'Still, my favorite quote continues to be 'We're not the product of our circumstance, but a product of our response.'

'Being optimistic, relentless, and resourceful got me this opportunity, and I'll carry that same attitude to my next one!

'I'm open to internships in Recruiting, Sales and HR in Austin, Chicago, New York, Detroit, remote and beyond.'

Another communications student from the University of Austin named Brook Gura told her LinkedIn network that she was told her offer did not exist anymore on a phone call.

'This summer, I was excited about the opportunity to work as an intern for Tesla. Yesterday I received a call that, with just three weeks to my start date, my offer was rescinded.

'Taking the time to think about this, I have learned that rejection is redirection. While I am incredibly disappointed that I will not have the summer I intended to have, I know that this moment will only help me grow stronger as a professional.'

She later told Business Insider that she spent three weeks interviewing with the company and had ultimately decided to reject her other offers in favor of Tesla's.

'It was exciting. I was looking for a big corporate internship. And it was close by. I wouldn't have had to relocate.

'[But] they just explained the company was making cuts that were going to start impacting interns, and that meant me. I was upset. This was not the only internship offer I had. I picked Tesla out of other organizations.'

Xinrui Lu, a graduate student from Washington University, said that she had prepared and booked flights to move for the summer but was told at the last minute that she did not have an offer anymore.

'For the past month, I’ve been looking forward to sharing exciting news about my summer internship with an incredible team at #Tesla. I had already booked my flight and arranged my housing, anticipating the adventure ahead.

'However, this afternoon, I received a call informing me that, due to massive #layoffs, my internship offer had been rescinded, just three weeks before it was supposed to start.'

The layoffs come as a result of Tesla's mass layoff announcement last month wherein about 10 percent of its 140,400-person headcount were estimated to be fired.

About 6,000 of those layoffs are primarily taking place in Texas and California.

According to the New York Post, The EV company usually onboards more than 6,000 students in the spring, summer and fall for internships.

CEO Elon Musk has yet not commented on any of the layoffs.
