BRAZEN FLY-TIPPER DUMPS MASSIVE HACK-UP TREES ON CITY ROAD JUST YARDS

  • The CCTV footage was recorded on Plume Street in Aston, Birmingham

A  brazen fly-tipper was caught on CCTV dumping 'huge hacked up trees' on a city road - just yards from a recycling centre.

Footage shows the fly-tipper getting rid of tonnes of branches and logs on Plume Street in Aston, Birmingham.

CCTV from storage facility firm JH Kemp Ltd captured the fly-tipper in action at around 7.45pm on Saturday.

The 1.15-minute clip shows the driver pull up on the road outside the closed industrial units.

He then lifts the truck's back up and drives forward to allow tonnes of branches and greenery to tumble onto the road behind him.

The van then speeds off leaving the carriageway partially blocked by piles of green waste.

Yet if the driver had looked up as he fled the scene, he would have spotted a sign for a recycling facility just around the corner.

A worker on the road said: 'It's so brazen to pull up in a crummy wagon and dump huge hacked up trees all over the road.

'I've heard of a few incidents of fly-tipping around here so it probably won't be the last time.

'The galling thing is that there's a recycling centre round the corner so it's not like they couldn't get rid of it all legally.'

Over the past financial year there have been more than one million reported incident of fly-tipping with local authorities issuing almost 70,000 fixed penalty notices with a further 1,681 prosecutions.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics earlier this year show that 60 per cent of fly-tipping involved household waste with 40 per cent of reported waste dumped on the roadside or on pavements.

It is estimated that local authorities spend around £60 million a year cleaning up waste while during 2022/23 some £785,000 was levied in fines - down from £837,000 the year before.

The figures show some four per cent of incidents - 42,000 in 2022/23 involve tipper trucks which cost local authorities £13.2 million to clean up.

According to the most recent data, the London Borough of Brent saw the highest number of total incidents in the country, with 34,830 reports of fly-tipping, followed by Camden, Westminster, Hackney and Hounslow.
